Update for Chapter 14 : How should you treat spondylolysis in the athlete ?
نویسندگان
چکیده
Since the publication of Evidence-based Sports Medicine, there have been a number of publications addressing the subject of spondylolysis. Although much of this literature expands the cumulative knowledge base on spondylolysis, there are still no published controlled trials on the treatment of spondylolysis in the athlete nor any studies comparing the most widely used diagnostic imaging modalities for this condition. As discussed in the original chapter on spondylolysis for Evidence-based Sports Medicine, there is a general consensus among authors on the pathogenesis and demographics of the disorder, but there are substantial differences in the diagnostic and treatment approaches recommended by various authors. This update will address the recent literature on spondylolysis as it relates to the fundamental question: How should you treat spondylolysis in the athlete?

Use of the one-legged hyperextension test and magnetic resonance imaging in the diagnosis of active spondylolysis.
BACKGROUND Active spondylolysis is an acquired lesion in the pars interarticularis and is a common cause of low back pain in the young athlete. OBJECTIVES To evaluate whether the one-legged hyperextension test can assist in the clinical detection of active spondylolysis and to determine whether magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is equivalent to the clinical gold standard of bone scintigraphy a...

Spondylolysis and spondylolisthesis are common diagnoses made in the athlete suffering from persistent back pain. Sports in which participants are subjected to repetitive hyperextension across the lumbar spine pose a risk for such injuries. Football lin...

Non-operative management is usually successful in improving symptoms, but surgical intervention is occasionally required. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of in situ posterolateral fusion in the treatment of refractory cas...
